Steamin' in Fitzroy Gardens

A walk through Fitzroy Gardens a few days ago brought us past workers laying down mulch to summer-proof the massive trees. It was steaming away (hard to see in my picture) and reminded me that last year I topped off the beds with steaming mushroom compost. I'm still not sure whether to repeat this or go with some other topping for a bit of nutritional variety.

I've never done the steaming compost thing. I imagine it's rather 'ripe' but you can just see the garden lapping it up like a hungry puppy. Really, I love steam coming off anything, but I think the smell might do me in. x

This was just a bit of heat from decomposing wood chips on a cold morning, I think- no smell to notice! My mushroom compost experience was similarly tame :)
I decided to go worms rather than compost when we moved here, which in retrospect was the wrong choice. One day when I feel rich I'll replace the worms with one of the modern composters....
